well, hello there, july!

What better time than July the 8th to talk about what happened in May? None better I say.

Merit and I started the month off with a trip to Texas. I believe this was her 8th or 9th flight (thanks to her amazingly generous PaPa.) She has flown more in her first 15 months than I flew in the first 20 years of my life. Here she is showing outwardly how I sometimes feel inwardly on these flights. One of the main reasons for this trip was so that I could get together with some friends from high school. I hadn't seen a couple of these girls in about 9 years, so it was so good to get together and catch up. This pic was taken on the bench in front of Chili's...where many a pic was taken back in our days at good ole Wylie High. The rest of the time was spent with family. It is getting more and more fun to see Merit with her cousins. She was constantly entertained...swimming, box surfing with PaPa, even her first try at gymnastics! We were able to go to my cousin April's daughter's party at the Gymnastics Sport Center. I took Gymnastics there as a kid and nothing had changed about the place...the same smell hit you at the door, the same Mary Lou Retton posters on the walls, I believe even the foam pit was filled with the very same pieces of foam that were there 20 years ago. All of this, of course, made me very happy. (If you look closely in the top left picture you can see that Merit and my cousin Mindi's son Hudson are lost in the foam pit...)Kevan came at the end of the week and was able to spend Mother's Day with us. He's the greatest and I love him. Just thought you should know.
Yet again, another fine trip to Texas. And for the two of you still wishing that you could hear more about May, don't worry, another post or two is soon to follow. Although I use the term "soon" loosely. :)

they have laces. and they're pink!

hey, i put some new shoes on,
and suddenly everything is right...

~paolo nutini, "new shoes"

I severely need to catch up. I am about a month behind on this blog. I haven't posted pics from our last trip to Texas and on Thursday, Merit and I are headed there again. In the meantime,

Merit got new shoes.

And she really likes them. She thought we needed a photo shoot to document her first lace-up shoes.

I agreed.

New shoes make me happy, too, baby girl.

26 on the 26th

Photobucket

Yesterday was my amazingly handsome husband's birthday. I like to stretch birthdays out for as long as possible, so it is perfect that I am just getting around to blogging about it today (birthday's not over, Kev, until it is blogged about). In fact, we started celebrating the night before his birthday at Kev's favorite Nashville restaurant, PM.

I think they look a lot alike in that pic. (People always tell me that Merit has my eyes, but look--I think she has his eyes! And smile. Oh, and pretty brown hair. And winning personality.)

Since Kevan and I have been dating, I have always wrapped his presents for any occasion in brown kraft paper and then I decorate the packages with sharpie. This year, Merit helped decorate her present for him. I couldn't break tradition and give her a measly crayon, so I was brave and let her use an actual sharpie.

Here's the birthday boy and his presents yesterday morning.

That afternoon, like any good wife/future room mother would do, I made "K" cookies and took them up to his work.

He was able to get off work early, and I caught some good pics of him and Merit enjoying his day.

I hung out with him on his birthday, too. Promise.

We love you, Kevan. I hope your birthday was indeed happy. I know I had fun celebrating you. Five years ago, you asked me to marry you on your birthday. I'm forever grateful that 21-year-old Kevan made that choice, and I am humbled and honored that your choice was me!

a whole lotta merit

If you aren't me, or a grandparent, this mega-post may be a bit much. I just want to remember some things about Merit, the 13-month-old, and I'm turning out to be a better blogger than baby-booker. Some of my favorite things about her right now are:

~She says "Hiiii" to everyone. Last night we were eating at a restaurant and sat close to the door. You would have thought she had been hired as their greeter.

~She points to her eyes (well, the general vicinity) and says "eyyye?"

~When I was little, I can remember really wanting to whistle, so finally, I just started faking it by making an "O" with my lips and doing a high-pitch scream thing. I fooled everyone, I'm sure. Merit does the same kind of thing when she snaps. She makes a snap motion in the air while simultaneously making a clicking noise with her tongue. See?

~I will be a little sad when she is no longer in the "learning to walk" phase. She either holds her little hands in front of her, palms facing out, or she has her arms going in all directions, I guess to keep her balance. Oh, my goodness, so cute. Here is a little video of some Merit walking. Oh, and some Kevan caterpillar-showing. And some Kevan swinging.

~She likes to carry around her babies and stuffed animals, and I like for her to do so, because it keeps me smiling. She frequently stops to give them a good hug and kiss.

~She loves to dance and slap her knee when any kind of music is on.

~Wheels on the Bus is a fave at the moment. She likes to do the wheel motion and "shush, shush, shush" with the mama on the bus.

~She's a talker and can carry a great phone conversation. Talking to her Nina...

~Peekaboo is always funny. So is her daddy.
